To give us confidence in dealing with collisions let us derive this result in a less elegant but more straightforward way. The general rule is to write down the equations for conservation of momentum and conservation of energy. Note that we measure all velocities in the same direction and let the algebra take care of the actual signs. In principle both bodies could continue to move in the same direction after collision.
